How Spiking Affects People

Spiking can have serious short- and long-term effects. Immediately, it can cause confusion, dizziness, nausea, hallucinations, and memory loss. Victims may lose coordination, struggle to speak, or become unconscious.

Longer-term impacts can include:

  • Physical health risks, especially if injected, including the need for tests for blood-borne diseases
  • Mental health effects, such as anxiety, trauma, and loss of confidence
  • Increased vulnerability to other crimes, including theft and sexual assault

What to Look Out For

If you or someone you know starts to feel or act strangely, especially after consuming a drink, it’s important to act quickly.

Warning signs may include

  • Sudden confusion or disorientation
  • Hallucinations or paranoia
  • Slurred speech or inability to communicate
  • Loss of balance or coordination
  • Blurred vision or dizziness
  • Unusual taste, smell, or appearance of a drink (e.g. foggy, extra fizzy, or salty)

What to Do If You Suspect Spiking

  • Stay with the person and keep them safe
  • Seek medical help immediately
  • Report the incident to venue staff and the police
  • Keep the drink if possible for testing
